RC's Inside Look

As a young boy, Derek Ostby dreamed of being an auctioneer. So much so that he did a speech on it in school. After graduating High School in the spring of 2005, he attended the Worldwide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA. “It was an intense week long training consisting of 14 hour days. The teachers were world famous with many of them being featured on various television auctions” stated Derek.
When deciding to hold an auction, the process for the customer is a relatively easy one. Derek will meet with you and look at your items to be sure you have enough to hold a sale. Once the contract is signed, that when Derek’s work truly begins. Pictures of the items are taken, sale bills made and hung in various locations, and the sale is listed on the website www.midwestauctions.com/ostby. In addition, that’s when the crew will line up public restrooms and find people to serve lunch.
In August of 2007, Derek utilized RC High Speed Internet along with traveling to Sioux Falls to complete a real estate course. This course, which was 100 hours, makes him eligible to auction real estate and close the transaction at public auction, upon passing the test, he received his license.
In May 2007 he graduated with a degree in Farm Management / Ag Mechanics and December 2007, earned his degree in Crop Production Sales and Service, both at North Dakota State College of Science
Derek was chosen for the New Century Farmer Conference held in Des Moines, IA. This is an educational experience available to 40 college students throughout the United States. Speakers talked about agriculture related topics July 9 – 13 2007.
I should also mention that auctioneering is not the only job that Derek has. He is a Crows Hybrid Seed Technology Advisor and farms some acres on the family farm as well.
If you’re looking for an auctioneer, Derek is licensed and bonded in SD, ND and MN. He is also a member of the South Dakota Auctioneering Association. Feel free to give him a call at 605-637-5317 or drop him an email at ostby4@tnics.com
